Unlike alphabets where letters sit side by side in a line, Korean Hangul groups letters into syllable blocks. Each block contains 2 or 3 jamo (individual letters): an initial consonant (초성), a vowel (중성), and optionally a final consonant (종성).
This means you never type isolated characters — you always type sequences that combine into complete syllable squares. It sounds complex but becomes completely natural after a few minutes of practice.
Example: how 한국 (Korea) is built
Korean Consonants (자음)
| Jamo | Sound | Jamo | Sound | Jamo | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ㄱ | g / k | ㄴ | n | ㄷ | d / t |
| ㄹ | r / l | ㅁ | m | ㅂ | b / p |
| ㅅ | s | ㅇ | silent / ng | ㅈ | j |
| ㅊ | ch | ㅋ | k (aspirated) | ㅌ | t (aspirated) |
| ㅍ | p (aspirated) | ㅎ | h |
Tense consonants (ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ) are the doubled versions — they produce a sharper, tenser sound. You'll find them on the consonants tab of the keyboard.
Korean Vowels (모음)
| Jamo | Sound | Jamo | Sound | Jamo | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ㅏ | a (father) | ㅑ | ya | ㅓ | eo (uh) |
| ㅕ | yeo | ㅗ | o | ㅛ | yo |
| ㅜ | u (moon) | ㅠ | yu | ㅡ | eu (neutral) |
| ㅣ | i (bee) | ㅐ | ae (bed) | ㅔ | e |

What Makes the Keybords Korean Keyboard Special
Most online Korean keyboards show isolated jamo that you have to manually combine. The Keybords Korean keyboard uses a real-time syllable composition engine — the same algorithm used by Korean operating systems.
This means:
- Click ㅎ → you see ㅎ
- Click ㅏ → it instantly becomes 하
- Click ㄴ → it becomes 한
- Click ㄱ → the ㄴ moves to form 한, and 그 starts building
The composition happens character by character as you click, exactly as it would on a real Korean phone keyboard. There is also a Words tab with pre-built common phrases so you don't have to build every word from scratch.
Tips for Typing Korean Online
- Always start with a consonant — every Korean syllable block begins with a consonant. If a syllable sounds like it starts with a vowel (like 아), use ㅇ as a silent placeholder initial.
- Use the Words tab — for common words like 안녕, 감사, 사랑, click the Words tab and insert them with one tap.
- Voice input works perfectly for Korean — Korean speech recognition in browsers is excellent. Click Voice, speak naturally, and the full text appears in Hangul.
- Copy and paste anywhere — once typed, click Copy to put the text on your clipboard. It pastes as proper Unicode Hangul into any app.
